Every day in Cyprus was HOT...I mean temperature wise. wink wink. The night was warm too, but since it's an island and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, there were mosquitoes. So I was faced with a dilemma: do I put more clothes on and be hot or stay comfortable with as little on as possible and get eaten by the bloodsucking insects?!
As we were walking from our usual night to the playground with the children, Ivanka stopped at a plant and pulled a branch off. She told me it was lavender and when she was a little girl her mother would pick it because the smell kept bugs away (not so much mosquitoes but moths and other pesky insects). Then she had me touch it and smell my hand. The scent was strong and nice.
Later that night, I left the resort and went to town with my new friend George. I was able to experience true Cyprus a little better even though he isn't originally from there. He told me about his country. And I returned to my room a few hours later without any new itchy bites on my legs. Was it the magical lavender?
SO...to THE GIVEAWAY:
I'm going to give away a bottle of lavender oils (helps relieve stress and maybe wards off pesky bugs) to anyone who can guess the country my new George friend is from (since I didn't know so much about the place).
HERE ARE THE CLUES:
1. They sometimes put funny marks above as well as UNDER the letters in the their alphabet.
2. A female athlete from this country shone during the Montreal Summer Olympics in 1976 (receiving the first perfect 10 score in gymnastics).
3. The language is included in the 6 most widely spoken standardized Romantic languages (and sounds a lot like Italian to me).
4. Vlad Tepes was a ruler who was nicknamed DRACULA for his cruel method of punishment through impalement.
5. The national flag has 3 primary colored vertical stripes

Ooooooh! I want to play!
The answer is: Romania.
Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife Elena fled the capital following the 1989 overthrow of Romania's Communist government. After being apprehended by the Romanian Army, both were executed and their lifeless bodies shown on TV for all to see. No amount of lavender oil will cure that.
The Ceauşescus were the last people executed in Romania before the abolition of capital punishment in 1990.
I'm guessing the thriving metropolis of Albania. Other than the war and civil unrest it is a fairly beautiful place. Hey if they have any oils for calming angry rebels you should give some to them
Proud to say I did zero internet research but since Turkey is one of the countries I've always wanted to visit:
I vote TURKEY
It's Romania, but it looks like somebody beat me.
Romania
I have never been but I love Dracula movies

ROMANIA
When i hear spoken Romanian i'm always about 80% sure it's Italian but when i hear Italian i'm positive it's Italian.
Punishment by impalement more closely resembles a stake through the heart than it does neck biting and blood sucking so i disagree with their chosen nickname for Vlad. Maybe "The DraculaTOR"? that seems more appropriate to me...or how about "BUFFY"?
Hey, I hope i don't get gyped outta the contest due to my anonymity!
Hey Deanna I know the the country for your giveaway thingy. The answer is Romania. Nadia Comaneci was the gymnast. Also they speak a romance language because the Roman Emperor Trajan conquered the region now known as Romania (then called Dacia) in the early 100s(Trajan's column gives an account of this in relief form, it's really cool). The Romans' Latin(the basis of all Romance languages) became the Romanians' Romanian, also the conquest is why it's called Romania in the first place! I win!!! I don't think I would have much use for essential oils though, so give it to someone else who can get the answer, or to destitute orphans who have spent their life deprived of essential oils. At any rate, have a nice day!
Interesting fact about Romanian--it's the only one of the Romance languages in which you still decline the nouns and adjectives like you do in Latin . . . or so I'm told.
Really I'm not the
Only one to
Make a guess
And I'm sure that I'm
Not wrong in that the
Italianesque country of your
Acquaintance is:
ROMANIA (see how I did that twice?)
romania. interesting fact: two of my cousins on the same side of the family (who are good friends as well) served there together and were companions to boot.
Okay so I'm a little late... but I have good experiences in Romania :) I was on a bus to Dracula's castle and as I was making my way down the aisle, the bus started moving and I fell down flat on my back. Everyone exclaimed in Romanian whether I was okay. I got up and said in English, "I'm okay...". Then I sat down and after some more rural stops the bus was very full. A lady with many sweaty fat rolls stood in the aisle next to me and her rolls were resting on me.
Then later at the train station a guy hit on me asking if I wanted a ride on his motorcyle into the mountains. We got talking and I told him I was Mormon and he said he took the discussions and wanted to join but just couldn't give up his bad habits. He said Eastern Europe raised him to smoke and have sex.
Do I win for experiences? But I already have some lavender essential oil... so let someone else win :)
I'd say Romania - as most the other bloggers voted for it :)
I don't know much about the country though... sorry no cool facts!
